ABOUT

The Consortium on the Revolutionary Era was established by five universities–Florida State University, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, and Louisiana State University–in 1972 to foster the study of Europe during the Revolutionary Period (1750-1850). The primary goal was to organize an annual conference for those interested in this field and to publish the results of their contributions. Participants include both faculty and students, primarily from the United States, Canada, and Europe. Although the first meeting in 1971 attracted only 75 students and scholars to the University of Georgia, the Bicentennial meeting, held at Florida State University in September 1989, attracted 225 scholars from six countries and almost 2,000 students from not only Florida State University but also from the University of Illinois, Ohio State, Auburn, and L.S.U.

The Consortium has expanded in the past twenty-five years and now includes seventeen universities and colleges. The Consortium has teamed with the board of Age of Revolutions (an open-access, peer-reviewed journal on the revolutionary era) to publish the conferences annual Proceedings.

You can find a back catalog of CRE programs on the Special Collections site at FSU here.

Bylaws

Consortium on the Revolutionary Era

Amended May 2020

Finances and Operations

1. The funds of the Consortium are provided by a contribution of $500.00 from each member school of the Consortium, except as noted under Governance 1. There are no dues collected from individuals.

2. The dues paid to the Consortium by the member schools are used primarily to provide funds each year to the school hosting the meeting for travel and an honorarium to bring in a scholar of international renown to present the banquet address at the annual meeting.

3. A Secretary, a Treasurer, and a CRE Board representative to the Age of Revolutions website Board are appointed annually by the Board of Directors and serve without pay. The Secretary keeps the minutes of meetings. The Treasurer keeps the financial records and provides an annual accounting to the Board of Directors. He/she is authorized to pay the usual expenses of the Consortium concerning the annual meeting, as well as other costs of operation as authorized by the Executive Committee between meetings of the Board.  The CRE Board representative on the Age of Revolutions website shall make day-to-day decisions on behalf of the CRE Board, bringing when appropriate larger matters to the Board for discussion and a vote.

4. If, for any reason, the Consortium is dissolved, the Consortium funds will be distributed to the current contributing institutions on a percentage basis, according to their contributions.

5. As an established international scholarly/educational tax-exempt and non-profit association, currently supported by state and privately funded universities of higher learning, as well as thousands of students and teachers interested in the history of the Revolutionary period, we hope and trust that this organization will encourage scholarly research and debate for years to come.

Governance

1. The Consortium is guided by a Board of Directors that makes policy decisions; each school that helps finance the Consortium with annual dues of $500.00 has one director on the Board.

2. The Board of Directors meetings are scheduled during the annual three-day meeting. The Chair is the current host Director of the meeting. All decisions are made by a majority vote. A Director can empower a substitute from his school to attend and vote in his/her place. The decisions will be circulated among the Directors and the conference participants will be informed of pertinent decisions. (It should be noted that almost all decisions are related to the annual meeting).

3. Between meetings, an Executive Committee deals with the every-day operations of the Consortium. No policy decisions will be made without the vote of the entire Board of Directors. The Executive Committee will include the following individuals: the current Board chair, the immediate past Board chair, the immediate future Board chair, the Secretary, the Consortium Treasurer, and the Consortium’s representative to the Age of Revolution’s Website.

4. In a given year, the representative of the host university will serve as chair of the Board and program director for the meeting.
